A historic earthquake-damaged building has been airlifted to safety from a steep Canterbury cliff this afternoon.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has been planning to rescue the Godly Head lighthouse for weeks and made a first attempt earlier this month, but that ended in failure when the 2000kg structure proved too heavy for a helicopter to lift.
Instead, abseiling teams have since been dismantling the building and today it was lifted out in parts.
